#IMWAYR: Still nothing...

I think I've conceived of an entirely new idea for book blogging, and it involves posts where I talk about all the books I didn't read, rather than the ones I did! How scintillating. /s

Seriously, though, this is the third week where I don't have a book to share, not even one I'm in the middle of. Usually when this happens, I'd just not post at all. But hosting the Kidlit Lovers' Meetups has made me feel more connected to this community, so I don't want to drop off the face of the earth just because I haven't read!

I completely failed at my goal of reading four graphic novels in August. (Call me Completely Failed Bookshelf.) I did read two, which is definitely not four, but is also not zero, so that's a win! And both of them, Sunhead and Blackward, were deeply meaningful in their own unique ways.

Also, in my defense, I actually did get partway into Ash's Cabin by Jen Wang, after my previous DNF from a few weeks ago. And it's such an incredibly beautiful book, too—I just have a sinking feeling it's too poignant for me right now, so I haven't been able to pick it back up. I was thinking I might try to read some K. O'Neill this next week, because their books are always deeply healing and comforting for me.

(OH MY GOSH—ACTUALLY, I realized my goal for August was reading four graphic novels. It was not finishing four graphic novels. And I did actually pick up four graphic novels—I DNFed two, but that is irrelevant per my initial wording! So I actually did meet my goal, entirely on a technicality. I'm glad I could finagle that—call me Completely Finagled Bookshelf.)

One last thing...

The Kidlit Lovers' Meetup!

We had a wonderful Kidlit Lovers' Meetup this past Wednesday, with seven bloggers (besides myself) who all brought their A-game to the discussion! I'm still on cloud 9 about how well it went—people shared so much about how books help them better understand both themselves and the world. Thank you to everyone who joined me!

Considering that this meetup had the most attendance of the three I've hosted, I'm excited to give a fourth one a try during September! And that's where you come in—if you're interested in joining us (and I'm certainly interested in having you!), please fill out this scheduling survey by Tuesday night. It helps me pick a date and time where as many people are able to attend as possible! (Because we've all got fairly wild schedules, so the overlap is often not as much as you might think.)

I hope you'll consider filling out this survey and joining us in September—I'm excited already!!

That's all for now—I'm sending well wishes into the universe your way! ✨✨

  1. I'm glad you're posting even though you don't have a book to review to stay connected. I think we all go through phases where we're too busy or not as in the mood to read. And when I'm not in the right space for a book, I don't finish them either. Maybe you could share upcoming releases you're looking forward to some weeks when you don't have a review.

I really enjoyed our meetup and am looking forward to connecting more and helping each other.

  2. It's okay, Max, life can be so full that the thing we like doing, like reading, takes a backseat. I had to skip last week because I hadn't finished much of anything! I still noted some of the titles you mentioned! Happy Labor Day!

  3. I had to laugh at the way you realized that ACTUALLY you DID fulfill your reading goal for August! I read Sunhead this week and LOVED it--a new favorite for sure. And YES to a K. Oneill. That's just what one always needs (some writers need to write and publish at least 2 books a year to satisfy me; Rebecca Stead and K. O'Neill are on that list for sure). The kidlit meetup was so much fun--brilliantly hosted, as always. Thank you again for all your work putting that together. Looking forward to the next meet up!

  4. I love that you achieved your August reading goal by reframing/reinterpreting the goal! Excellent. The kidlit meet up was really fun.

  5. Ha! Reframing for the win! I call that a success. The real win is that you found some books you enjoyed and gained perspective from (even if that perspective is that it's not a book for you!). I'm enjoying connecting via the meetups, too. It's great to know that people have similar thoughts/questions/frustrations. Sometimes blogging can feel so solitary. I love that it doesn't have to be. Hope you have a great week, Completely Fabulous Bookshelf!! :D
